One of the great things about having my Casita is that I can take off pretty much any time, go where I want and stay as long as I want (within reason, of course!). I've heard other photographers talk about Bosque del Apache, the Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, the festival, etc., but until this past summer thought of it as a place I'd like to visit sometime. This past summer I decided "if not now, when?!" so I called and made reservations at a little RV park about 3 miles from the visitor center for the month of Nov. Then I looked into the Festival of Cranes and signed up for several photography workshops. Anyhow, now I'm here and it is fascinating!  This is a photo I took a few days ago, many more are/will be on my blog as time goes on.

Thanks, glad you like it. That was taken in very late afternoon with the sun really low (golden hour is great here!)

Many thanks for the kind words everyone! Getting up at 5 and out of the trailer by 6 to get the birds at sunrise is a habit now. These two  were taken at the Crane ponds, about 1 mile from the campground, so the sun was rising behind me and lighting up the birds.

This one was taken at sunrise at another location with the sunrise reflected on the water and the cranes backlit. Most mornings there aren't many clouds but this particular morning there were just enough to really add some color to the reflection.

It is extremely cold here in the mornings, in the mid 20s until after 0700 so standing around outside with a camera and tripod isn't for the faint of heart but the rewards are worth it.

We've been to Bosque del Apache three times. Maybe I shouldn't boast, but we love the cranes so much we named our  2011 SD  "Grus egg",

Grus being the genus name for 'cranes'. My husband, the photographer, took many photos of sandhills, one of them we had made into a decal for our Casita:

If you love the cranes as much as we do, you must go to the Rowe Audubon Sanctuary in Kearney, Nebraska. We stopped there on our way to pick up our Casita and saw THOUSANDS of Sandhill cranes (both greater and lesser, although DNA wise, they're the same species), and even a handful of whooping cranes.
