Putting New Mexico in the search box on this forum brings up Mexico.  I would like some route suggestions please.  I will be coming into Arizona probably on highway 89 from Kanab heading towards Fredonia but since I have not been in that region I don't know if there are better suggestions.  I will be working my way east but this will be before Casita and I have given myself two extra travel days for sightseeing.  I will take a freeway if it is in front of me but speed is not high on my list of priorities.  By the time I get to Texas I may tent camp.  Have to see what my comfort level is.  I have looked up Palo Duro state park and Cap Rock state park.  Looking at maps is good but now I am asking for suggestions from every one.  The timing will be roughly May 7,8,9 .

Thanks for everything

Susan

Hi Susan --

Not many freeways up near Kanab.

Going through Fredonia south on 89A, you'll eventually end up at Jacob Lake. It's at a higher elevation, so you could run into snow. There's a campground there, but it not certain if it's seasonal. From there, go east on 89A. As the road descends, you'll see the beautiful Vermilion Cliffs. There are several lodges along the way, if you need a place to stay. Stop and see the Navajo Bridge. Eventually Hwy 89 takes you into Flagstaff.

Another, much longer route would be from Fredonia to Page and Lake Powell on Hwy 89.

Both areas are worthwhile trips. I'd probably let the weather and time dictate my route.

I'm not clear from your post what general route through Texas you'll be taking but Palo Duro and Caprock Canyon SPs are beautiful with nice campsites.  Either or both are worth a visit.
