I wanted to find out if anyone else deals with pine pitch on their egg.

We live in an area where the beautiful ponderosa pines pretty much rain the stuff. BearEgg won't fit in the garage and so far with slope and size of lot have been unable to figure out a way to put up any type of a shelter. Our conventional rv we cleaned well twice a year and waxed annually. The tried a cover, but it only lasted one season. The pitch was so thick on the cover that it actually attracted ants, so we went away from the idea of a cover.

Questions:

1) How best to remove pine pitch from fiberglass?

2) Any of the covers do well with pine pitch?

Thanks much,

Peach

I once camped in Central Oregon under a giant Ponderosa Pine that rained cones and pitch. What a mess all over my tug and trailer. One of my fellow campers smeared mayonnaise on some of the worst, left it for a few hours and it wiped right off. Someone else suggested peanut butter. I'd say try it! You probably have some in your refrigerator. The best part.. is NO chemicals are used that may damage the finish or your lungs. I'm a believer in trying what I have first... YMMV

I've never had to clean pine pitch off the Casita, but WD-40 has cleaned the stuff off my hands, clothes, chain saw, and the bottom of my shoes. I've used WD-40 to clean road tar off the Casita and it didn't harm the finish.

I got a bad case of pine pitch on my bicycle last year. I tried a little bit of every type of cleaner I could think of (I don't think I tried the WD-40, though). The only thing that worked well on the pitch was bug and tar remover. It even got rid of the pitch on my hands. I think I would rather clean the pitch off the entire Casita with bug and tar remover given the price of peanut butter and mayonnaise.

I have used WD-40 to clean the grime off the caulking on the Casita around the doors, windows and vents. It does a great job in removing the grime but it leaves a film on the fiberglass (even after wiping with a wet towel) that collects dust that creates a cloudy spot during travel.

I clean pine pitch off my trailer and awning every season. What works for me is to clean if off after it's good and warm from the sun, soak the pitch with car wax for a while and it comes off in one piece. On the awning I soak very hot dish washing soap on it and it comes off the same way.

I had to laugh because you're absolutely right. But, in my case I was out camping and would be out for another (nearly) two weeks. I was moving from one campground to another before I got home. What I didn't want was to leave globs of pitch on the hood of my tug to bake and I didn't have bug and tar remover... but I did have mayonnaise! A huge difference between what one does on the road and what one may do when parked at home.

"Oops" is a good product, available in hardware stores, for stubborn sticky stuff. We keep a small can in the Casita.

Mayonaise is mostly salad oil blended with eggs and some spices...
try a little crisco and see what happens!

Peach,
My vote would be for the WD-40 and some coarse fabric like burlap. Use some dish detergent to clean the WD-40 after and re-wax the spots/area.
Best chance at sap removal is as soon as possible.
