The battery access is a questionable issue. I had to remove the seat to get to it. I replaced it with an AGM type that doesn't require service. AGM and Gel type batteries require special attention so as not over charge.

To access the battery : remove the street side bench and then the cover of the battery box.

You will also have access to the water pump and water heater (If equipped).

You do not require a breakaway switch on the 13' since your trailer is under the 2,000 pound threashold. I do not have one for my 2000 16' SD and don't see the need.

I installed an extra large group 31 AGM battery in my Casita because I do not wish to monitor water level in a lead-acid in a small space. But I also upgraded my converter to a smart one from Best Converter. Now I don't worry and sometimes leave it plugged in for weeks while stored.

Backing:

I was told to take the sway bar off before backing. I always do.

I am still no better backing than a year ago. Sometimes fair. Other times not. Usually some helpful man will talk me through it.

5) I didn't see any safety break-away for the trailer brakes. Did I just miss seeing it, or does the 2002 trailer not have one? Can one be added?

I have a 2000 SD which I bought used. It did not have a breakaway switch when I bought it but I had one added to the tongue by a local trailer shop.

You are correct. The 2002s did not include a break-away cable. Smart move to have added one.

i also got the same advice to take the sway bar off before backing when i bought my casita feb 1. the last thing i put on before pulling away from the house is the sway bar and it's the first thing i take off in the cul de sac before i get back home.

i practice backing in the walmart lot near the house before i leave on any trips. i certainly don't claim to be an expert at it, but at least i don't leave them laughing in the camps when i arrive like i did in february! LOL, happy travels, claire and merlin, excellent schnoodle

I love my 13 footer Patriot Deluxe--all winter it's up in my field on Boards, so tires are off ground.took the battery out so it wouldn't freeze.( group 27) I cut the battery access out larger years ago. all the lighting are LED's. I have power to it, so on decent nights I go up there & camp out.

gotta agree, i love my patriot deluxe as well. casita makes good trailers, for sure and my introduction back into camping/travel after tenting eons ago has been certainly enriched with the purchase of "Sassie Cassie" feb 1. LEDs are in my future, as well as solar and generator to really be self sufficient.
