How is Mrs. Hooter doing? I think she likes your nesting box.

I have enjoyed your account of Mrs. Hooter over the years.

We don't see much of her these 28-33 days she's busy incubating the current egg supply. Occasionally we can see the top of her head or her tail, but with the temperatures in the thirties and forties she stays low in the box, close to the eggs.

Most likely it will be another ±two weeks before the eggs hatch and then during the 4-5 weeks the hatchlings are developing is when we see more activity.

During the incubation period, there is communication between the adults, from before sundown until daybreak. I guess she puts in her order for what meal she wants delivered nest side and he replies.

Hi, Harold,

Wow, great timing! I was just going to email you about your barred owls. Folks, there is a big difference between BARRED owls, such as Harold has, and BARN owls, like we have in our backyard.

 

My husband took pictures of these little guys last summer. We've had them every year for several years. Look at the difference.

"Our" adult pair returned before the New Year and are probably sitting on eggs as we speak.

 

They're fabulous mousers, just like Harold's birds. Great photos, Harold!

We too have been waiting. Yesterday we saw the adult female leave the nesting box and I was able to get this picture of this year's owlets.

Like us, they've been around for a long time.

For ten years since 2008 (missed two years because of no nesting box), a pair of Barred owls have nested in our back yard. They are getting older and this year there seems to be only two owlets, but mama is still providing meal delivery service.

Wonderful catch there, Harold!! They must be hungry babies for her to be hunting in midday!

We are hoping to have our first ever pair of Kestrels using the nest box we put up several years ago. And we have our barn owls back,too.

Aaand, as a update..we DEFINITELY have a pair of kestrels nesting in our backyard!! It's so neat to see these little 'pocket rockets' flying overhead.
