Yesterday, while shuffling trailers (utility, horse and camping) this Barred Owl flew in to give a hoot.

It waited while I went for the camera and seemed to not mind when I moved in closer on my tractor. Evidently they are less spooked by moving mechanical devices than moving humans.

I think it recognized me.

Two years ago we watched two fledglings mature and leave the hollow tree in our back yard.

Do you see the two owls in the bottom picture?

I don't know, Harold. With all that PhotoShop spoofing you subject us to, how do we know your not pulling our feathers?

Well, let me give you an update.

The hollow tree in which the owls nested in 2008 fell down, so in 2010 I built and put up an owl nesting box. I was too late in '10 getting it up to even expect them to use it and last year we were disappointed when they didn't choose the nesting box I worked so hard getting up some thirty feet into a tree. However, one January day, about the time they would have been starting nesting, I caught sight of a stray cat in the nesting box and had to take necessary steps to prevent that.

So fast forward to January 31, 2012. While eating lunch I looked out at the nesting box and this is what I saw:

Having not researched enough to know exactly what the incubation time is for owls, but thinking it somewhere around a month, we are keeping close watch. We hear "who cooks for you, who cooks for you-all" every afternoon and one night we were awaken by one that sounded like it was right on our front porch.

Hopefully I will be posting more follow-ups in the days and weeks to come.

Harold

Looks like an owl who stopped to use your owl outhouse???? :D

A few years back I heard a thrashing noise between the inter and outer wall of our barn, so I got a flashlight and looked down in between the walls and there was a young barred owl stuck in there. I pryed the inside plywood wall off and away it flew. I don't know if it was going after a mouse or was just clumsy! Nice photos as always, Harold, keep them coming.

Well, it's day 31 since we first saw her in the box. She seems to be more restless, but we keep watching and she does too.
