To all,
I've noticed with some interest various MPG claims on this site. I have always been obliged to tow with the vehicle that suited my daily driving requirements. Four different trucks since we've had the Casita - all 3/4 or 1 tons with V8's and 4.10 gears. One truck actually had a V10 and it provided the best milage of them all. All except the current truck (03 Chevy cargo van) had manual transmissions. All these trucks got 13 -15 mpg on the highway. Not great, but affordable. All were rated to tow twice what a loaded 17 footer weighs or more. I am a conservative , careful driver with no violations in 40 years of driving. I typically drive 5 MPH below the speed limit when towing. I provided this information so people can get a feel of my circumstances. The interesting thing is in all of these vehicles my milage drops usually 1, but sometimes (headwind or mountains) 2 MPG. So I'm at 11 - 14 MPG with the Casita. This seems no worse than people who tow with more fuel efficient vehicles. I know why this is, I'm not making my truck work very hard to tow a Casita, but the reason I bring this up, is we're considering towing with my wifes Jeep Liberty (gas). I know many people on this site use the Liberty, but before I invest in another controller and deal with her spare tire interference and go to a WDH, I like to hear from others who tow with the Liberty. Maybe it's not worth all the trouble for me to make the change. I would be interested also in hearing various MPG drops by various vehicles, towing versus not towing. (Highway only since none of us tow our Casitas around town) Thanks in advance for your input. Larry This post has been edited by Larry & Debbie Gamble: Jun 5 2006, 12:10 PM -------------------- |
